Bhediya – The Story

Bhediya (1)

Bhaskar and his cousin, Janardhan “Jana,” visited a small town in Arunachal Pradesh to construct roads for a development project. They remain acquainted with two locals, Jomin and Panda, who guide them. One night, a wolf inside the forest chases and bites Bhaskar. Jana and Jomin instantly take him to Dr. Anika, the local veterinarian. Seeing the full-size chew mark on Bhaskar’s bum and him having a significant ache, she offered him an injection, hoping it might alleviate his pain.

The subsequent day, Bhaskar begins dealing with changes within him. He reviews a heightened experience of scent and listening while interacting with animals. Meanwhile, the area people and tribals oppose reducing timber in the forests to construct roads and refuse to support them. However, Bhaskar managed to get help from the young people, and they agreed to the challenge. Soon, two guys who remained a part of the undertaking were found useless. The scratch and chew marks on their frame indicate that they could have been mauled and killed using an animal. Panda says that a shape-transferring werewolf is at the back of the killings; however, nobody believes him.

Seeing Bhaskar’s increasingly strange behavior, Jana suspects that Bhaskar might be the shape-shifting werewolf. Jana and Jomin secretly acquired some of Bhaskar’s stools to conduct a stool test and found fragments of human bones in them. It remains revealed that Bhaskar is indeed the one behind the killings, as he tells the truth to them that ever since the wolf bit him, he has been transforming into a werewolf every night and that he has no control over it.

They decide to lock Bhaskar up at an isolated place so he does not fall prey to his urges. However, a local cop spots them and hears the truth, saying he will reveal Bhaskar’s identity to everyone. Just then, the wolf that had bitten Bhaskar appears and kills the cop, allowing them to escape. To find a cure for Bhaskar’s condition, they visit an aged medical practitioner. He tells them that the only way Bhaskar can remain cured of his transformation is to get bitten again by the same wolf on a new moon night, at the same spot as before.

Bhaskar wears protective gear all over his body, except his bum, where he needs to get bitten by the wolf, and goes to the forest, along with Jana and Jomin, waiting for the wolf to appear. The wolf seems, and they are shocked to see that it is none other than Dr. Anika, a shape-shifter. She reveals that she had been bitten by the wolf around a hundred years ago. Since then, she has been the forest’s protector, killing anyone who tries to destroy it and its trees. She had bitten Bhaskar, aiming to kill him, but spared him, sensing goodness inside him. She advises him not to fall prey to deforestation and its rewards.

Anika suddenly, remains shot down and captured by the local police force. Bhaskar changes into a werewolf and saves Anika, killing the police officers. However, Anika succumbs to her injuries and falls off a cliff, leaving Bhaskar heartbroken. He decides to work on constructing the roads around the forest’s borders, leaving the trees unharmed.
